Phil Varone by Lisa LaPorta

Phil Varone is an accomplished drummer, music producer, songwriter best known for his work with the bands Saigon Kick, Skid Row, Vince Neil, & Prunella Scales. Varone born on Long Island, New York on October 17th, to parents both of Italian decent, began his fascination with the entertainment business at the age of 7. In 1980 his family relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he attended high school and started to play with various local bands. In 2004 Phil left the music business to pursue his other passions acting, stand-up comedy, adult entertainment series, his Sex Toys & Rock & Roll adult toy line, and hosting his own Radio show on Playboy Radio on SIRIUSXM (Channel 102) beginning August 17th Fridays 7-9 Pacific standard time.

I remember growing up as a kid, the amazing experiences I had, inspirations and the people that inspired me. I was fortunate enough to know the band Saigon Kick and Phil Varone who has been a great inspiration to me. When I hear his songs like “Coming Home,” “All I Want,” and “Love is on the Way,” it brings back fond memories. First time I met Phil it was in Florida, where they played at a local club. They were amazing to see live and so much fun to hang out with. I can recall one time hanging out with them on the tour bus partying, moshing, laughing, and just going crazy. Those were some of the greatest times in my life that I will never forget.

Besides being a great drummer, I have seen Phil transform himself in so many different ways. He is passionate about what he does, which is why I think he is successful at so many other things, he is a true entrepreneur. Phil, who spent four years straight on the road, wanted to take a break from touring, to spend time with his family. Phil being in an open relationship, said he can separate the sex from the intimacy, rather than be a liar or a cheat. It all started from Sex rehab, when his agent called him, his first reaction was he really didn’t wanna do it. After Phil agreed to do Sex rehab, he used that as a launching ground since he already had a relationship with Vivid. Shortly after, they wanted him to do the Swinger Series, Swinging American Style. It’s been over a year since then, the first one they shot they started playing a poker game in his house with friends. Phil in his own words said, “He wanted to show the realness of it, shooting as if the camera wasn’t there.” It’s basically a look into Phil’s real life.

I have to say when I reached out to Phil after all this time I was very impressed. Besides being a well known rock star, and not to mention a now adult film star, this man has more brains than some of the smartest people I know. After all his experiences this is a man that is well grounded, with a realness about him. I am embarrassed to say he even taught me a thing or two about my writing skills. He had me laughing hysterically during the last conversation we had. He said to me, “Lisa, when people look at you they see a pretty girl with big boobs. What do you wanna be known as? When you do something, do it right. I know you have brains up there, either cover up or show them what you got... use it to your best advantage. Show them you have big boobs and brains, and when you write... write with passion.” I have to give him credit the man knows what he’s talking about. I can’t wait to tune into his radio show and get some advice on sex, there is a lot to learn about this guy; more than meets the eye, LOL.

Lisa LaPorta : What are your most memorable times being in Saigon Kick?

Phil Varone : For me, it was getting my first record deal and then going into the record store (yes.. they had record stores back then) and buying my CD. The second best was having a hit song and a number 1 video on MTV (yes.. MTV played video’s then too..)

Lisa LaPorta : What are your most memorable times being in Skid Row?

Phil Varone : The size of the tours was the greatest. Opening for Kiss, Poison, Def Leppard, Tesla, etc. And just having a fun time with friends.. We had a blast, and I will never forget those times..

Lisa LaPorta : What was your experience like being on the road?

Phil Varone : It was mayhem. I loved touring and performing live. It was everything I dreamed about as a young kid hoping for a record deal.

Lisa LaPorta : Why did you take a break from the music business?

Phil Varone : I wanted to pursue acting and comedy. Those where the two other dreams I had as a kid so I moved to Los Angeles in 2006 and started over.

Lisa LaPorta : How did you get into the adult entertainment business?

Phil Varone : It was pretty easy. I did a celebrity sex tape with Vivid Entertainment and the rest is history.

Lisa LaPorta : What is it like being in front of the camera while you’re having sex?

Phil Varone : No different. I usually would film stuff with girls anyway, so this is just like the same thing. There are no big sets and crew, just me and the girl and a little camera. Just as if you were filming yourself having sex with your spouse.

Lisa LaPorta : Does it affect your personal life?

Phil Varone : Not at all. I’m a swinger and have been for many years. We have an open relationship and have sex with other people in our normal life.

Lisa LaPorta : What is your view on relationships?

Phil Varone : I think relationships are great when you find the right person.

Lisa LaPorta : What made you start your own adult toy line?

Phil Varone : It was a bucket list thing. I wanted to do a cast of my penis and when I pitched the idea to California Exotic Novelties, they wanted to take it further and do a complete toy line. I was very happy about that.

Lisa LaPorta : I hear you have a new radio show coming out tell us about it.

Phil Varone : Yes, I’m doing a new show on Playboy/SiriusXM 102. It will be a combination of my live comedy show and a radio show. It’s called "The Sex Stand Up Rock N Roll Radio show with Phil Varone". My first show is Friday, August 17th at 7pm PT.
